How Does the Bible View Homosexuality?
Scripture Reading:  1 Corinthians 6:9-11
prepared by David G. Churchill

Introduction — The world sidesteps the issue whether homosexuality is right or wrong.
          A. Those who seek to practice homosexuality as “normal
               avoid consulting the Bible.
          B. Those who seek to encourage homosexuality as “natural
either deny or twist the Scriptures.
          C. Those who seek to accept homosexuality as a “good option” and “gay
either ignore or misread the Scriptures.
          D. Those pressured into fearfully accepting the “dignity” of homosexuality
refuse the security of the Scriptures.

(The promoters of homosexuality actively insist on labels which describe it as the superior, happier, and more fulfilling lifestyle such as Gay, etc.  They also refuse to tolerate and actively discourage any labels which describe it as abnormal, unusual, inferior, inappropriate, or wrong such as Queer, etc.)

Definition: homosexuality is the “sexual desire or behavior directed toward a person or persons of one’s own sex.”

(Random House Webster’s Unabridged Dictionary (electronic))

     I. What was the natural sexuality that God invented?
          A. Gen. 1:26-27 – God created man in His own image, male and female He created them.
          B. Gen. 1:28 – God blessed this relationship between men and women.
          C. Gen. 1:28 – God encouraged this sexuality between men and women, and expected it to be fruitful.
          D. Gen. 1:29 – God provides means for sustaining this relationship.

II. What was the natural domain God invented for this natural sexuality?
          A. Gen. 2:18-25 – When the man Adam needed a helper comparable to him, God created the woman Eve.
          B. Gen. 2:24 – To accommodate the natural sexuality of men and women and their natural desire to be together, God created marriage and defined it as the joining of a man and a woman … of husband and wife (1 Cor. 6:12-20; 1 Cor. 7:1-9; 1 Thess. 4:3-8)
          C. Gen. 2:25 – In this God-established relationship untainted by sin, the man and his wife were not ashamed of their natural sexuality.

III. How does God view homosexuality?
          A. Rom. 1:18 – will receive the wrath of God
          B. Rom. 1:20 – without excuse
          C. Rom. 1:21-25 – a bad choice to be rebellious, unthankful, futile, darkened, foolish, false worship, unclean, lustful, dishonorable, and stupid (exchanged truth to have a lie)
          D. Rom. 1:26 – women having sex with women is vile and against nature
          E. Rom. 1:27 – men having sex with men is against nature, shameful, and due a penalty
          F. Rom. 1:28-31 – does not retain God in their thinking; is debased and unfitting; filled with all unrighteousness (including sexual immorality)
          G. Rom. 1:32 – “
the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things are deserving of death

(Remember this “death” is a spiritual death, not a physical one, and is a result of God’s judgement, not man’s judgement.  While many people do physically die as a result from contracting diseases during homosexual activity, this physical suffering/death is simply an associated deterring consequence and not the actual punishment from God.  As individuals and faithful Christians we are to discourage and rebuke homosexuality … like this lesson does … and as a society we may choose to pass and enforce civil laws restricting / encouraging homosexual activity, but only God may apply the final spiritual punishment.)
          H. Rom. 1:32 – those who approve homosexuality are grouped with those who practice homosexuality and other types of sexual immorality

IV. What is the final result for those who refuse to repent and insist on practicing / approving the fornication of homosexuality?
          A. Heb. 13:4 – God will judge (Greek word translated in this verse as “judge” literally means “condemn”)
          B. Rom. 2:5-11; Eph. 5:6 – the wrath of God
          C. 1 Cor. 6:9-10 – they will not inherit the kingdom of God.
          D. Gal. 5:19-21 – they will not inherit the kingdom of God
          E. Eph. 5:5 – no inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God
          F. Jude 5-11 – suffer the venengace of eternal fire (v.7)
          G. Rev. 2:14-16 – fight against the sword of Jesus’ mouth (i.e. God’s Word provided through Jesus — John 12:44-50)
          H. Rev. 2:20-23 – tribulation from Jesus; Jesus will give according to their deeds

     V. What is the final result for those who DO repent from practicing / approving homosexuality?
          A. 1 Cor. 6:11 – washed, sanctified, and justified in the name of Jesus and by the Spirit of God
          B. Col. 1:13-14 – conveyed into the kingdom; redemption through Jesus’ blood; the forgiveness of sins
